I first had the opportunity to work with Mr. Sendak in late 1997, when I was asked to bid on a database project to photograph and archive both his artwork and art collection. The task began with a proposed timeline of 9 months and 3000 pieces. It has grown into an ongoing project with over 12,500 pieces now photographed, scanned, and included in the database.
Originally the database was created in a cross platform FileMaker database, but as the project continued and grew, I found the information needed to be stored in a way that made it as easy as possible to share parts of the database quickly and with anyone. I was looking for as much flexibility, stability and sheer usefulness as possible. As a result, the database now exists in Apple’s iPhoto program. Now, not only are pieces easier to find and view, but they are all instantly ready for access whenever needed via printouts, email or web access - eliminating the need for full cross platform access.
Other work has included doing all the photographic copy work for his recent “The Art of Maurice Sendak” book, being a member of the Sendak Creative Workshop, creation of design elements on the computer for final poster art, and transfer of a large classical music library from LP records to CDs.
